Fayette Golf looking towards a new era

Lemont Furnace, PA - The 2021 Penn State Fayette Golf team is getting the season started under unique circumstances: It doesn't have a head coach.

"We are in the process of making a hire," said interim Penn State Fayette Athletic Director Steve Oberly after the retirement of previous coach Dave Gumbert. "Things should be wrapped up by mid-September."

While other fall sports teams lost their 2020 season, the Golf team lucked out.

"Fortunately for Golf, we were able to schedule a few competitions during the 2021 spring semester," said Oberly. "We're coming off of a season with a roster primarily compromised of graduating seniors."

Oberly knows it will be a different type of challenge this season, but he knows what he would like to see from the team.

"Our primary expectation includes establishing the groundwork for a new era of Fayette Golf," he said. "With the retirement of Coach Gumbert and his staff, we are positioned in a way to instill a new vision and direction for the program's future."

Our primary goal is to stabilize the program with new leadership and to calibrate our focus with player and program development strategies.  We will have a successful season if we can integrate new program leadership with the needs of our student-athlete golfers.  A shared mission and vision builds trust and strong relationships with current and prospective recruits."

Fayette opens the season on August 30 at Penn State DuBois at the DuBois Country Club.
