MBB sweeps conference games

The Penn State Fayette ended a five-game losing streak with a pair of conference wins over the weekend.

Friday night, Fayette (3-5, 2-1) handed Penn State Wilkes-Barre (7-1, 2-1) its first defeat of the season, 68-62.

"We played extremely hard Friday and took great pride in our defense," said first-year head coach Marcus Thomas. "We weren't hitting our shots early, but we continued to defend and kept ourselves in the game.  The middle of the second half we were able to start making some shots, went on a run and sustain our defensive intensity.  We beat a really good team."

Trailing 34-30 at the half of the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) game, Fayette shot 59% (13 of 22) in the second half, including 62.5% (five of eight) from long distance.

Iman Young (Silver Springs, MD/West Potomac HS) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds while Tavian Mozie (McClellandtown, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) had 17 points and Trevor Laskody (Morgantown, WV/Trinity Christian HS) dished out five assists.

For the game, Fayette shot 49% (25 of 53) from the floor.

Saturday afternoon, Fayette defeated Penn State Scranton (2-7, 0-3), 81-60.

Once again Fayette trailed at the half, but it exploded after the intermission.

Down 27-25 at halftime, Fayette outscored Scranton 56-33 in the second half after shooting 56% (20 of 36) from the field while limiting Scranton to 28% (11 of 40) during the same stretch.

"I am extremely proud of our group because after we came out flat, (the coaches) challenged the players at the half to play the way we are capable of playing and they responded.  It was great to see from a young group and we are pleased to head into break with a win."

Mozie went off for 25 of his 29 points in the second half to lead Fayette while Young had his second double-double in as many days with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Saluca (Suva, Fiji/Laurel Highlands HS) also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Fayette is off until Tuesday, December 3 when it heads to Penn State Beaver for a PSUAC matchup.
