Lady Roaring Lions earn doubleheader sweep of Beaver

MONACA, Pa. – The Lady Roaring Lions bounced back from a heartbreaking loss over the weekend to do something that they hadn't done in almost a decade, sweep a doubleheader from perennial power Penn State Beaver.

 

Fayette (3-6, 2-1) won by scores of 13-7 and 5-0.

 

GAME 1: FAYETTE 13, BEAVER  7

Fayette got off to a great start in Game 1, pushing across seven runs in the first inning.

 

Kayla Hancheck got things started with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Guthrie got on on a fielder's choice and both players moved up a base on a passed ball. Alyssa Strausser drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

 

Jessica Stairs then drew a walk, bringing home Hancheck. Guthrie was thrown out a home trying to score on a passed ball. Miranda Nichols reached on an error, with Strausser scoring on the play. Stephanie Longo then drew a walk and Andrea Lash singled, scoring two. Taryn Dille and Chelsey Duricic both drew walks, bringing home another run.

 

Kayla Hanchek then walked for the second time in the inning and Guthrie's fielder's choice scored Dillie.

 

Beaver got two runs three runs back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a pair of singles and three stolen bases.

 

Fayette got a run back in the top of the second when Nichols walked and Long followed with a double and later scored on an error.

 

Beaver  picked up single runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to make the score 9-4, heading into the fifth inning.

 

The Fayette bats again went to work in the top of the fifth. Longo homered. Lash walked and Dillie singled. Both scored when Moriah Kromer reached on an error. Stairs scored Kromer with a single to close out the scoring.

 

Stairs and Longo both went 3-4 with two RBI,

 

Lash got the win on the mound, tossing seven innings, giving up 11 runs (seven earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.

GAME 2: FAYETTE 5, BEAVER 0

After a crazy first game, things settle down a bit as Kromer tossed a five hit shutout, striking out four to pick up her second win of the season.

 

Fayette got Kromer all of the runs she would need in the second inning when Lash led off the second inning with a double and later scored on Nichols' double.

 

The Lady Roaring Lions added some insurance in the fourth when Strausser led off with a double, Stairs walked, and Lash smashed a three-run homer.

 

Guthrie accounted for the final run, hitting a triple and then scoring when the relay play was mishandled.

 

Fayette displayed power in the game. Of the team's six hits, five went for extra bases as Lash, Strausser, Guthrie and Nichols had doubles, Guthrie added a trip and Lash homered.

 

Lash was 2-3 with three RBI, Guthrie was 2-4 with an RBI.

 

The Lady Roaring Lions return to action on Saturday when they make their first eastern swing of the season, visiting Penn State Brandywine on Saturday at 2 p.m.
