Lady Roaring Lions sweep Schuylkill

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – The Lady Roaring Lions capped off a perfect eastern swing by sweeping both Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Schuylkill over the weekend to improve to 6-1 in PSUAC play.

 

GAME 2: FAYETTE 13, SCHUYLKILL 3

 

The Lady Roaring Lions put on a hitting display to win their sixth game in a row.

 

Fayette didn't waste any time in the second game of the twinbill with Schuylkill, scoring six runs in the first inning to give pitcher Moriah Kromer all the runs she would need to wrap up her third consecutive victory.

 

Morgan Miller started the game with a  double but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Kromer followed with a single and advanced on a passed ball. She scored on Jill Guthrie's single. Guthrie went to second on an error by the left fielder and moved to third when Alyssa Strausser

 

Stephanie Longo then singled to center, scoring Guthrie. Miranda Nichols followed and consecutive walks to Kayla Hanchek and Teri Lewis added a pair of runs and Miller got her second hit of the inning, lacing a single to score Nichols. Kromer singled to bring in Hanchek and give the Lady Roaring Lions a 6-0 lead.

 

Schuylkill Go a run back in the bottom of the first. Jena Leffler reached on a bunt moved to third on an error. Dominique Grasser singled to score Leffler.

 

Jessica Stairs restored the six-run lead, leading off the second inning with a towering home run to right center.

 

Fayette added four more in the third.

 

Hanchek led off with a walk and Lewis' single moved her to third. Miller followed with a sharp single scoring Hanchek. Consecutive walks to Kromer, Guthrie and Stairs forced in two more runs. Longo's single to right brought home the inning's final run and the Lady Roaring Lions led 11-1 after three innings.

 

Miller doubled in the fourth and scored on Guthrie's double to the gap in right center. Stains followed with a single, scoring Kromer

 

Schuylkill got two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Courtney Tyler's single drove in a pair of runs.

 

Miller led the offense, going 4-5 on the day with a double and two RBI. Kromer, Guthrie and Longo were all 2-3. Stairs led the way with four RBI.

 

Kromer got the win, scattering seven hits over five innings, striking out nine and walking two.

 

GAME 1: FAYETTE 8, SCHUYLKILL 0

 

Stairs tossed a one-hit shutout to lead Fayette to an 8-0 win in the first game of the twinbill.

 

The Lady Roaring Lions were impressive at the plate as well, hitting three home runs including an epic blast by Guthrie in the fifth inning.

 

Fayette got on the board in the top of the third. Kromer reached on an error and Guthrie singled before Stairs blasted a three-run homer – her second of the day.

Later in the inning, Miller drew a two-out bases-loaded walk to score Longo.

 

Guthrie led off the Fayette fourth with a double and moved to third on a single by Stairs. Strausser followed with a bomb to left and the team's second three-run blast of the game. Guthrie closed out the scoring in the fifth with a monster blast to the alley in left center.

 

Stairs and Guthrie were both 3-4 and Strausser had three RBI to pace Fayette's eight hit attack.

 

Fayette returns to action on Saturday when the Roaring Lions host Penn State Hazleton at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson Park Complex in Hopwood.
