SB splits double header against Greater Allegheny

Penn State Fayette split a softball double header with Penn State Greater Allegheny Friday and in the process, it picked up its second win of the campaign.

Both teams started fast as they combined for five runs in the first inning, but it was Fayette (2-12 overall, 2-8 PSUAC) who pulled out the win, 4-2.

Greater Allegheny (6-8, 6-8) scored two runs in its first at-bat off of Hope Hixon (Armagh, PA/United HS), but the senior calmed down and limited the guests to a pair of hits the rest of the way.

Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Fayette scored three runs to take the lead.  Lauran Minerd (Uniontown, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) scored Fayette's first run on a fielder's choice and Kelsey Holp (Grindstone, PA/Frazier HS) followed with an RBI single to score Hixon to tie the game up.  Kristina Aeschbacher (Carmichaels, PA/Carmichaels HS) then hit into a fielder's choice of her own to score Lauren Mastowski (Dawson, PA/Frazier) with what would be the winning run.

Minerd gave Fayette an insurance run in the second as she drove in Carissa Cyphert (Scottdale, PA/Southmoreland HS) with a sacrifice fly.

The run, however, would not be needed as Hixon struck out three and walked seven while limiting Greater Allegheny to three total hits to earn the win.

Cassidy Uphold (Grantsville, MD/Northern Garrett HS) had two singles to lead Fayette's offense which finished five hits.

The nightcap was a different story as Greater Allegheny rolled to a 10-0 win in five innings.  Maura Ryan struck out seven to earn the win for Greater Allegheny.

The guests scored nine runs in the first as they sent 13 hitters to bat in the inning.  Greater Allegheny had five hits in the inning and was aided by two Fayette errors, a hit batter and a walk.

Kylie Saltis (Mount Clare, WV/South Harrison HS) only recorded one out as she gave up the nine runs (six earned) and five hits in the first inning.

Greater Allegheny added a run in the second.

The teams play another double header Saturday at Greater Allegheny.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
