Softball secures two wins over WCCC

Youngwood, PA- Softball secures two wins over Westmoreland County Community College.

Head Coach Becky Howell was able to secure her first two wins as the head softball coach yesterday afternoon. The team traveled to WCCC's field for a 2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. double header. Fayette came out strong in the first seven inning game, finishing the game in only five innings. The final score was 9-0, with majority of the runs taking place in the fourth inning. Leading for the team was second year player, Liz Murphy with 3 runs, 2 RBI's, and 2 hits. Not far behind was first year player, Taryn Stewart with 3 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI. Madison Cyphert reminded everyone of her pitching skils with an astonishing 9 strikeouts in just five innings.

For the second game, it started in a battle with a 2-2 game heading into the top or the second. Fayette inched with 1 run in the second by fourth year player, Daelin Burnsworth. Inning number four showed to be lucky again with five runs being scored. Fayette finished the game in five with a final score of 10-2. Leading for Fayette was once again, Liz Murphy with 2 RBI's, 2 runs, and 2 hits. Not far behind was fourth year player, Emily Conklin with 2 RBI's and 2 hits.

Coach Howell shared her thoughts on the double header, "Opening up the season with 2 wins is a great feeling, however we know this season will continue to get tougher, so we have to take the positives and negatives back to the practice field and get to work.  I was very pleased with both pitchers of each game.  Maddy Cyphert and Liz Murphy both did a fantastic job of hitting locations and trusting the defense when they needed to.  Offensively, our bats finally started warming up by the third inning of game 1 and we never looked back.  Again, we will continue to work on our mechanics and just continue to get better.  Overall I was very pleased with our entire team effort, and for us to be successful this season it will take an entire team effort every single game."

Fayette's next game will be their home opener against Grove City on Monday, March 11th for a 1:00 P.M. start.
