Track and Field builds momentum from Frostburg State Meet
This past Saturday's meet was more reminiscent of a fall cross country race than a sunny spring track meet. Penn State Fayette's fledgling track team travelled to the aptly named Frostburg State University Invitational to compete in near freezing, rainy weather. It seemed apropos, that the team would consist of mainly mid-distance runners, several whom also ran cross country.
Breyanna Gursknis and Kirsten Webb became the first women to compete for track and field at Penn State Fayette, when they toed the line for the 1500 meter race. Gursknis finished 12th in 7:02 and Webb crossed the line in 7:24, good for 13th place.
In the men's race Devin Pisarski finished 6th overall, with a time of 4:23. Anthony Berdine, competing in his first track meet ever, finished 23rd in 6:15.
Michael Elliott had the highest finish of the day, with his 5th place showing in the 400 meter hurdles.
The distance foursome also competed in the open 800 meter race. In the men's race, Pisarski finished 8th overall in 2:10. Berdine crossed the line in 2:44, finishing 6th in his heat. The women's 800 saw Gursknis repeat a 12th place finish in 3:04. While Webb completed the race in 3:24, good for 14th place.
"We were missing a few athletes, due to sickness, injury and prior commitments. But, those who competed did so against a little weather adversity. It can only make them stronger," said Coach Joe Carei.
The team will travel, next, to the Westminster College Invitational on Saturday, April 8th.
