Fast Start keys 75-25 win over York

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa.  – The Lady Roaring Lions started off the game with an 18-3 run and never looked back en route to a 75-25 win over Penn State York in their PSUAC conference opener played Saturday at the Main Arena.

"I was really pleased with the way we started," Fayette Head Coach Vince Capozzi said. "We wanted to come out an take control early, and scoring the first 16 points of the game certainly did that.

Kaitlin Miller (Bald Eagle, Pa.) set the tone right away drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key on Fayette's first possession. She went on to score 13 and added nine rebounds.

Hayley Moreland (Uniontown, Pa.) led all scorers with 17, shooting an incredible 8-10 from the field.  Kaitlin Miller (Bald Eagle, Pa.) added 13 to go with nine rebounds. Courtney Haines (McClellandtown, Pa.) added 12, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists.

"Haley had an outstanding shooting night. Life is a lot easier when you have a player that shoots 80 percent." Capozzi added.

Kelsey Laurine (Amity, Pa.) narrowly missed a triple-double, scoring nine, pulling down 10 rebounds and notching nine assists. Freshman Ally Rudolph game off the bend to score nine to to along with three assists.  

Fayette (1-4, 1-0) started fast when Jackie Halapy (Morgantown, W.Va.) scored off the tip as the Lady Roaring Lions scored the game's first 14 points. Moreland had a layup, Miller drained a three from the top of the key, Moreland followed with a jumper, Laurine buried a three and Haines made a layup to help the Lady Roaring Lions establish control early. The Lady Roaring Lions shot a blistering 66 percent from three point range and 62 percent from the field in the first half.

Meanwhile, Fayette's defense was holding York to just a pair of field goals in the first half.

Capozzi was not surprised by the defensive showing. "We've worked on it a lot in practice and it paid off today. Hopefully this gives us some confidence going forward."

For the game, the Lady Roaring Lions shot 50 percent from the field, 60 percent from three point range and pulling down 26 defensive rebounds.

Fayette travels to Penn State Beaver on Wednesday for a key PSUAC matchup. Tip time is 6 p.m.
