Lemont Furnace, Pa. --After seven successful seasons Kurt Mattern has resigned as head women's basketball coach at Penn State Fayette to take a new position as asssistant women's basketball coach at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe.

"We are all disappointed that Kurt is leaving the program," athletic director Vince Capozzi said. "He did an incredible job of taking our program from its first baby steps to one that is respected throughout the USCAA."

Within five years, the Lady Roaring Lions went from conference doormat to four straight PSUAC Final Four appearances and a conference championship in 2012. The team also reached the USCAA Final Four in 2013.

"I  will always be thankful for the work he did here," Capozzi added. "On a personal note, we have been friends for a very long time and I had the pleasure of standing beside him as his assistant coach for five years. One of the highlights of my coaching career will always be winning that conference championship with him in 2012."

While the school conducts a search for Mattern's successor, Capozzi will serve as the interim head coach. "We are going to aggressvely search for a person who can contiune to build upon what we already have in place," he said.
