A bitter loss with a sweet story; Haines notches 1,000

Lemont Furnace, PA – In the second of two contests, the Lady Roaring Lions (2-1, 5-7) surrender the victory 74-54 to the Carlow University Celtics on Wednesday January 11th, 2017.

An emotional night, filled with anticipation for one of Fayette's own local products in Courtney Haines (Senior, Albert Gallatin HS), the Lady Lions seemed overwhelmed early from tipoff, being outscored 18-4 going into the second quarter.

Fayette picked up play and managed to cut the deficit heading into the second half. Led by seniors Taylor Smith (22 points) and Courtney Haines (23 points), the loss didn't feel so bitter.

With fans and spectators at the edge of their seats with anticipation, it was a steep challenge but manageable task for beloved local product and senior, Courtney Haines. Haines was 22 points away from achieving what most can't and few have – join the prestigious 1,000 point club.

With 12 seconds remaining, and in a way that only seemed fitting, Haines received a pass from fellow Senior and 1,000 point member, Taylor Smith, as she drove to the net for her last layup of the evening - the sweetest layup of all, her 1,000th point.

As the final seconds counted, the Lady Roaring Lions took their last non-conference loss before they return to conference play for the latter half of the season. Although a loss on paper, the emotion of joy and tears of happiness for Haines stole the night as she accomplished a milestone in front of her home crowd, friends, and family.

Haines joins a club only four others have managed to join before her; Kasey Ruble, Caitlin Wontroba, Jill Guthrie, and Taylor Smith.

Haines will look to help carry her team into spring conference play as they travel to PSU Hazelton on January 13th. Tipoff is set for 6pm.
