WBB splits weekend road games

The Penn State Fayette women's basketball team hit the road over the weekend and split a pair of non-conference games.

On Saturday, the Nittany Lions (1-2) downed Miami University-Hamilton, 83-69, before falling on Sunday at the University of Cincinnati-Clermont, 61-54.

In both contests, Fayette finished with four players due to foul issues and its roster being so small due to injuries.

"Despite our shortcoming with numbers right now, we were able to get the split this weekend," said head coach Scott Hillen. "With a little more depth, we get the win today.  However, we will keep working hard as we near conference play."

Dae-lin Burnsworth (Monarch, PA/Connellsville HS) led the way Saturday with 20 points, Kaitlyn Riley (Charleroi, PA/Charleroi HS) added 18 points, Brooke Poling (Perryopolis, PA/Frazier HS) had 14 points and 17 rebounds and Taylor McCormick (Laurel, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt HS) finished with 13 points.

For the game, Fayette made 22 of 26 free throws.

In Sunday's close defeat, Burnsworth finished with 18 points and Riley had 12.

"We had a bad shooting game," Hillen said. "We missed a few layups that could have cut the lead to three points in the last two minutes.  It was a great defensive effort, but we were just off from the three-point line."

Fayette only made six of its 30 three-point attempts.

The Nittany Lions open the home portion of their schedule Wednesday when they host Westmoreland County Community College.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 PM.
