Lady Lions win QF matchup; turn to PSUAC semi's

Lemont Furnace, PA - The Penn State Fayette volleyball team (19-7) opened up the PSUAC playoffs with a four-set win over Penn State Mont Alto Tuesday night in quarterfinal action.

Head coach Sam Swetz talked about the win.

"I am happy with the win," she said. "The girls did what needed to be done."

Up 16-11 in the opening set, Fayette went on a 9-2 run to close the first set and won, 25-13.

The second set was tied at 13-13, but Fayette closed it on a 12-3 run to win, 25-16.

Mont Alto (11-13) avoided being swept in the third set by winning, 25-21.

The upset-minded guests jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the fourth set, but Siteri Tale (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands HS) said enough was enough and put Fayette on her back.

With the team trailing 12-7, she scored seven straight points to give Fayette a 14-7 lead and it pulled away to win the final set, 25-17.

"I finally woke up or was in a zone," she said while fighting back a huge smile. "We had to get it together and I had to be a good leader.

"Now we are headed back to Main (campus), and while we have work to do, we have found our spark."

Tate finished with 18 kills and four blocks, Jadyn Barnish (Carmichaels, Carmichaels HS) had 31 assists, Chanel Porter (Cumberland, MD/Allegany HS) had 27 digs, Morgan Pytlak (Rillton, PA/Yough HS) had three assists and Kiki Martin (Brownsville, PA/Brownsville HS) added three blocks.

Fayette has now won 15 of its last 16 matches, and during the run, it has won 46 out of its last 52 sets.

With the win, Fayette advances to the PSUAC semifinals Monday at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University in University Park.
