Fayette wrestling preseason preview

Lemont Furnace, PA - Penn State Fayette wrestling coach Jerome Simon has a limited roster right now with five wrestlers, but that doesn't mean he isn't setting high goals for the team.

"We want to win the PSUAC team title and place in the top five in the USCAA," he said. "We also want to be top five in the Mid East Conference and qualify individually for Nationals in Allen, Texas."

The team is limited early on in terms of bodies, but Simon hopes it picks up in January.

"The first semester, we will be competing with five wrestlers," he said. "The second semester, we should have nine or 10 wrestlers."

The current quintet is young as Aaron Mylan (Rices Landing, PA/Jefferson Morgan) is the elder statesman of the group as a sophomore.

"Aaron is a leader," Simon said of Mylan, who will wrestle at 141 (pounds) or at 149. "He has good technique."

The other four wrestlers are freshmen Alex Shafley (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant HS) at 149, Arik Nickelson (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville HS) at 149, Doug Bittner (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant HS) at 125 or 133, and Gannon Lenhart (Derry, PA/Derry HS) at 174.

"Alex is enthusiastic and disciplined while Arik is energetic and continuously in motion," Simon said. "Doug has very good work ethics and wants to improve each day while Gannon is strong and hard-working."
