VB continues to roll; USCAA championship match next

The Penn State Fayette women's volleyball team is one win away from a United States Collegiate Athletic Association national championship.

Thanks to their dominant play Friday, Fayette (29-3) faces defending champion Wales & Johnson Saturday to crown the 2019 champions.

"We are so excited about how far we have come," said head coach Sam Swetz. "But we have more to accomplish."

Friday morning, the Nittany Lions won their second Pool Play match of the championships earning them the top seed from Pool B when they swept Great Bay Community College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13 and 25-15).

Siteri Tale (Uniontown/Laurel Highlands HS) had 11 kills for Fayette while Jadyn Barnish (Carmichaels, Carmichaels HS) recorded 15 assists and Machaela Hall (Fairchance, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) had 11 digs.

Friday afternoon, Fayette swept Penn State University Athletic Conference rival PS Greater Allegheny, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17 and 25-15), in the USCAA semifinals to advance to Saturday's championship match.

Tale had 10 kills, Kayla Zelonka (East Vandergrift, PA/Kiski HS) and Jayla Johnson (Fairchance, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) recorded each had seven kills, Hall had 12 digs and Angel Buwawa (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands) added 11 digs.

"This was a huge win for us," Swetz said. "We are so excited for (the championship match)."

Fayette defeated Wales & Johnson in its opening Pool Play match Thursday in four sets.
