Stevenson, bats carry baseball team at PS New Ken

New Kensington, PA - The Penn State Fayette baseball team opened up Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 win in seven innings at Penn State New Kensington.

"The guys did what they were supposed to do," coach Mike Sikorski said. "Garrett (Stevenson) threw lights out and got better as the game went on with a high-energy effort.  He pitched as good as you can for his first game out and we hit the ball well, executed and this outcome was different than it was Saturday."

Stevenson (Hempfield, PA/Hempfield HS) struck out six batters over six innings and received help from his offense as every starter recorded at least one hit with Fayette (1-1, 1-0) pounding out 14 total hits with five players recorded at least two RBI.

Nate Zimcosky (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS) recorded two doubles, giving him four in two games, and Sikorski spoke about the freshman.

"Nate has been on fire early and Noah Hansen has been swinging the bat well as has Cade."

Hansen (New Kensington, PA/Kiski Area HS) had a double and a single along with three RBI while Warrick (Mill Run, PA/Connellsville HS) drilled a three-run home run.

Matt Morgan (Eighty-Four, PA/Ringgold HS) finished with a pair of singles while Nik Gibson (Uniontown, PA/Uniontown HS) had a single and a double as well as three RBI and Kyle Ridley (Dunbar, PA/Connellsville HS) drove in two runs.

Fayette jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with the big hit being a two-run double by Hansen.  Up 3-1 going into the fourth, Fayette added a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 9-1 lead before exploding for six runs in the seventh.

The team is off until Wednesday, March 24 when it hosts Penn State Greater Allegheny in a PSUAC game.

Sikorski is thankful the team will have some significant practice time by then.

"We will work on a little bit on everything," he said. "Our defense has been solid, and we will work on situational hitting.  We also want to get a routine down with our pitchers.  With Garrett pitching so well today, we didn't have to use as many pitchers, so we want to get guys throwing as well."
