MBB moves into fourth with road win

After a 72-65 win at Penn State New Kensington Tuesday night, Penn State Fayette men's basketball coach Andy Hedrick feels his team is trending in the right direction.

"We won a big game to help make us relative in the conference again," he said after the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) game. "New Kensington played very hard and made a few runs, but we pulled it together in the end."

With the win, Fayette (6-6 overall, 2-4 PSUAC) pulled even with New Kensington (4-6, 2-4) for fourth place in the PSUAC West division.

There were six ties and six lead changes in the contest, and when Will Hagwood (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby HS) gave Fayette a 47-45 lead when he made a layup with 9:18 to play in the game, it never trailed again.  This came after Fayette trailed at the half, 33-29.

Hagwood scored 12 points off the bench and was one of five Fayette players to hit double figures.

Dasilas Jones (Fairmont, WV/Fairmont HS) led the way with 15 points while Mo Freeman (New Castle, DE/Salem Community College) and Tave Mozie (McClellandtown, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) both added 14 and Dom Boring (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster HS) finished with 11.  Freeman, Mozie and Boring all had a team-high eight rebounds while Jones had a game-high five assists.

Neither team shot well as Fayette made 25 of 68 field goal attempts (36.8 percent) while New Kensington made 27 of 79 field goal attempts (34.2 percent).  Fayette made nine of 25 three-point attempts (36 percent) while the hosts were four of 19 (21.1 percent).  Fayette made 13 of 25 attempts (52 percent) from the foul line while Kensington was seven of 19 (36.8 percent).

Both teams had 54 rebounds with New Kensington's Manny Dotson pulling down a game-high 18 boards.  Fayette had one more turnover (19-18) and won the points off turnover battle, 23-20.  New Kensington had the advantage in the paint (40-22), second chance points (11-10) and bench points (28-16).

Fayette stays on the road for two more conference games this weekend as it is at Penn State York (9-3, 5-0) Friday for an 8 p.m. tipoff and at Penn State Mont Alto (8-2, 4-1) Saturday for a 3 p.m. start.  York sits in second place in the PSUAC East while Mont Alto is second in the West.
