Record Broken at First T & F Meet

Record Broken at First T & F Meet

The Penn State Track and Field team doesn't officially begin its season for a few more months, but that didn't stop a handful of runners from getting some action in at the West Virginia University Open on Friday, December 3rd.

Looking best for the Nittany Lions were senior James Plez (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast HS) and freshman Cooper Salvay (Brownsville, PA/Brownsville HS).  Plez reached the finals in the 60-meter race where he finished sixth with a school record time of 7.36.  Salvay took 10th in both the 400-meter and 200-meter with times of 58.47 and 26.25, respectively.

Head coach Joe Carei spoke about the experience.

"I look at track meets as a series of lessons," he said. "Many of the events are technical, so you work on a part of your event each time.  The athletes took a lot away from the meet.  The beauty of track and field is that you can run against anybody, and our team went up against athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III."
