T&F does well at Penn State Tune-up

While the Penn State Fayette track and field team doesn't have its first official meet for more than another month, it sent some team members to the Penn State Tune-up Friday.

"We were able to get some of our younger athletes to experience track and field at a highly-competitive level," said head coach Joe Carei.  "It was very stiff competition and hopefully it makes them hungry."

Fayette competed against several Division I schools including Penn State, Pitt, WVU, West point and UMBC, as well as some Division II and III schools.

The highlight of the meet for Fayette was Chloe Kalp (Melcroft, PA/Connellsville HS) winning the unseeded 3,000-meter run in 12:16.

"She ran a smart race, tucked it until there were about 600 meters to go, and made her move," Carei said. "There was no response from the other runners in the race."

James Plez (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast HS) made the finals in the Long Jump and finished seventh overall with a school record jump of 5.97 meters.  He also ran the 60 meters, finishing third in his heat and 10th overall, with a 7.54 second time.  Plez also finished 18th in the 200-meter in 25.66.

"James is a hard worker, so we were happy to see him compete well today," Carei said.

Ethan Mates (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant HS) finished 10th in the unseeded mile with a time of 5:29 and he also ran the 800-meter, finishing in a time of 2:24.

In the throwing portion of the event, Jennifer Zelenick (Fredericktown, PA/Beth-Center HS) made the finals, and finished ninth, in the shot as she threw 7.59 meters.  She also finished 11th in the weight throw with a school-record of 7.47 meters.  Also, Jacob Noel (Greater Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe, PA) finished 14th in the shot put with a heave of 8.15 meters.

The team will now work on their respective focuses until the team takes part in the Bethany (WV) Invitational on March 26.
