T&F sets several records at Mountaineer Invitational

The Penn State Fayette track and field team took part in West Virginia University's Mountaineer Classic Saturday, and head coach Joe Carei was happy with what he saw from his Nittany Lions, including several new school records being set.

"It was a good day for a lot of improvement," he said. "It was a good field with several Division I schools.  (James) Plez and (Chloe) Kalp had great days and we saw improvement by most athletes in all the events.  The facility was top-notch."

Plez (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast HS) set school-records in the 100-meter with a time of 12.06 seconds and in the long jump with a distance of 6.81 meters.

Other highlights from the men's team include Jake Noel (Greater Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe, PA) finishing fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 15.7 meters, Gavin Postlethwait (New Martinsville, WV/Magnolia HS) was third in the high jump (1.75 meters), Logan Miller (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS) was third in the pole vault (2.43 meters), Drew Erdman (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Salem HS) was fifth in the steeplechase (12:09), Mitch Minda (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward HS) finished the 5,000-meter in 17:23 and the men's 4x400 meter team (Postlewait, Plez, Ethan Mates (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Minda) finished fifth in 3:54.

Kalp (Melcroft, PA/Connellsville HS) finished seventh in the 5,000 meters in a school record 20:16, and she also broke the school record in the 1500-meter in a time of 5:38.  Haley Miller (Masontown, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:29, Nicole Walker (West Mifflin, PA/West Mifflin HS) was ninth in the 3,000 meters in 12:38 and the 4x400 meter team (Kalp, Miller, Julie Seliga (Smock, PA/Uniontown HS) and Walker) finished sixth in 5:15.

The team next competes in the Westminster Classic on April 9.
