Fayette Drops Both Games to Beaver; Nichols Recognized

R.W. Clark - Oliver, Pa –The Penn State Fayette Lady Roaring Lions looked unstoppable as they headed into their doubleheader against Penn State Beaver on Sunday. The Lady Lions were on an eleven game winning streak, and they were tied with Beaver for first place in the PSUAC West Softball Standings. These were pivotal games for both Fayette and Beaver; the winner would take first in the standings.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Penn State Fayette and Penn State Beaver both scored in the first inning on errors. Miranda Nichols earned the RBI for Fayette, and Vanessa Jackson earned the RBI for Beaver. In the top of the second inning, Beaver took the lead with two runs in. The Lady Lions tried to rally back after Beaver scored another run in and Jenna Petrucci homered in the 3rd. Fayette did manage to score two runs in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the seventh. But Fayette's efforts fell short. The final score was 7-4.

In second game of the doubleheader, the first four innings were a pitchers dual. Fayette's pitcher Tiffany Markovitch only gave up one hit and Beaver's pitcher Vanessa Jackson also only allowed one hit. But in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, Beaver managed to score 3. And those 3 runs were enough for Beaver to win. The final score was 3-0.

If there is one silver lining in the losses on Sunday, Penn State Fayette recognized senior Miranda Nichols. As catcher for the Lady Roaring Lions, she has been a key piece to the success the softball team has been having this year. She will graduate with a business degree.

The Lady Roaring Lions are now 13-5 in the conference and are in second place in the PSUAC West. Although the Lady Lion's winning streak was broken, they will look for a win in their final regular season game of the season. Penn State Fayette will play Greater Allegheny on Wednesday, April 26th.
