Fayette golf excited for upcoming 2018 season

Lemont Furnace, Pa - Head golf coach Dave Gumbert is excited that the start of the season is here, and he has set detailed goals for his team members.

"(As coach), I want to provide a safe environment for our student-athletes and coaches as we practice and compete in tournaments throughout the tristate area," he said. "We also want to provide a competitive atmosphere for our student-athletes and this year, for example, we are conducting the first 'Race for the PSF Cup," he said. "We developed a point system based on where a participant finished in tournaments and designated practice rounds throughout the fall season.

"The player with the most points at the end of regular play wins."

Gumbert then added, "We want to provide instruction and positive reinforcement to the student-athlete and support them in attaining their educational goals."

While talking, Gumbert spoke about the keys to the team having a successful season.

"We have to have dedicated practice," he said. "We also have to have strong participation in the 10 regular tournaments listed on our fall schedule."

Gumbert said that that will lead to a successful season, and he laid out what his definition of one is.

"We want to participate at the PSUAC/USCAA championship tournament held at State College at the end of the season," he said. "We also want to place in the top three teams at our first home tournament on Saturday, September 15 at Duck Hollow Golf Course.

"Most importantly, we will have a successful season if our student-athletes are progressing towards their educational goals."

The top returning players are Ryan Gesso (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS), Lou Gonzales (Port Lavaca, TX/Calhoun HS), Noah House (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Southmoreland HS) and Eric Silbaugh (Uniontown, PA/Uniontown HS).

Three new players join the team this year with the trio consisting of Liam Reshenberg (Uniontown, PA/Geibel Catholic HS), Alex Shafley (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Pablo Gudier (Washington, DC/Woodrow Wilson HS).
