Roaring Lions struggle at Mont Alto

The Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions men's basketball team fell to Penn State Mont Alto, 74-54, in PSUAC action Saturday. The loss drops the Roaring Lions to 1-4 in the conference, with eleven games still to play. Fayette could not hold on to the narrow one-point advantage they held at halftime, being outscored by 21 in the second half.

 

The Roaring Lions were led by junior Josh Tomson with 12 points coming on his game-high four three-point field goals. Sophomore David Winns added 10 points in his first game back from injury, while junior reserve Anthony Howard chipped in eight points. Sophomore Ian McCombs pulled down a game and season-high 13 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end. Sophomore James Pratt contributed nine rebounds, six assists and seven points, despite fouling out with nearly 10 minutes left to play.

 

Fayette was outrebounded 39-38, and struggled shooting from the field. Mont Alto shot only 34 percent (25-for73), but it bested the Roaring Lions 31 percent (20-for-63). Mont Alto also more than doubled the amount of made free throws, making 19 to Fayette's nine.

 

Mont Alto was led by Jesse Newman with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Jeremiah Mitchell posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Onyneaka chipped in 15 points while Shane Santell posted 11 to round out the Lions players in double-figures.

 

Fayette next travels to Penn State New Kensington on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 7:00 p.m. in a rematch of their Dec. 9 match-up. Fayette won the previous meeting 85-66. The Roaring Lions then travel to Penn State Scranton on Saturday, Jan. 22, before returning home to host Penn State Beaver on Jan. 24.
