Big second half spurs Roaring Lions

Big second half spurs Roaring Lions

February 1, 2011--Uniontown, Pa.

A career-high 33 points on 13-for-14 shooting for sophomore David Winns was enough for the Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions to take home their third consecutive win, 76-72, over PSUAC foe Penn State Greater Allegheny. Despite struggling in the first half and trailing by as many as 12, the Roaring Lions battled back with a strong second half for the comeback win. The win takes Fayette to 5-6 in the PSUAC, and 5-14 overall.

Winns was joined by sophomore Ian McCombs in double figures with 12 points. McCombs also pulled down 12 rebounds to post his second straight double-double. Junior Josh Tomson finished with 10 points, including four critical points from the free-throw line late in the second half. Playing without leading scorer James Pratt, the Roaring Lions looked to back-up freshman point guard Alex Santella who stepped in and contributed six points and six assists in a career-high 30 minutes of action.

Greater Allegheny dominated the offensive glass, pulling down 21 rebounds and converting them into 18 second chance points. The Lions also put up 28 more shots than Fayette, but the Roaring Lions shot nearly 54 percent (29-for-54) from the field while Greater Allegheny shot only 36 percent (30-for-82). Winns presence in the middle also helped Fayette dominate the paint, as they outscored the Lions 46-30 in the lane.

Greater Allegheny was led by Darius Prince who scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Roaring Lions travel to Penn State DuBois on Thursday, Feb. 3, in a PSUAC match-up. Tip-off will be at 8:00 p.m.
