Fayette drops key conference game at Greater Allegheny

February 9, 2011--McKeesport, Pa.

Penn State Fayette's late surge of three point field goals was not enough, as Penn State Greater Allegheny took home an 80-78 victory in a PSUAC West division game. The loss drops the Roaring Lions to 5-9 in the conference, and eliminates them from PSUAC playoff contention. Greater Allegheny improves to 4-11 in the conference.

The Roaring Lions were led by freshman Tyler VanOlst and sophomore David Winns with 19 points each, while junior Josh Tomson and sophomore Ian McCombs each contributed 18. Tomson was 6-for-12 from behind the arc, while VanOlst made five three pointers, including a half-court shot at the end of the game to make the final score a two-point deficit. Winns also pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds.

Fayette outrebounded the Lions 42-35, outscored Greater Allegheny in the paint 32-30, and won the second-chance points battle 20-10. However, that was not enough as Greater Allegheny forced 24 Roaring Lions turnovers, directly turning those opportunities into 24 points.

Greater Allegheny was led by Darius Prince with 40 points and 10 steals, narrowly missing a triple-double with nine rebounds.

The Roaring Lions finish their regular season with home contests against Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 3:00 p.m. and Penn State DuBois on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 8:00 p.m. Both games will be held in the Community Center Main Arena.
