Fayette men drop first round match-up to Southern Maine

March 2, 2011--Uniontown, Pa.

 

The 10-seed Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions were defeated by 7-seed Southern Maine Community College, 84-73, in the first round of the Men's Division II portion of the USCAA National Basketball Championships. Fayette drops to the consolation bracket to face 4-seed Berkeley College on Thursday, March 3, at 1:15 p.m. in the Community Center Main Arena at Penn State Fayette. Southern Maine advances to the quarterfinals to face 2-seed University of Cincinnati-Clermont at 9:30 p.m. in the Main Arena.

 

Fayette was led by sophomore David Winns with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Ian McCombs added 16 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore James Pratt added 15 pionts and six assists, while junior Josh Tomson scored 14 points on four three-point field goals while dishing out four assists.

 

Despite being down 12 at halftime, the Roaring Lions battled back to within two points on three different occasions in the second half, but could not take the lead. Fayette struggled from the free throw line, making only nine of 22 attempts from the charity stripe. With the teams evenly matched inside, each pulling down 45 rebounds, Southern Maine pulled away with it's perimeter shooting, making 10 three-point field goals.

 

Southern Maine was led by Coleman Findlay with 29 points and seven rebounds, while Josh Mackie made six of the SeaWolves three-pointers, finishing with 19 points.

 

Fayette's meeting with Berkeley College will be it's first, as both teams come off of tough losses. Berkeley was defeated by Andrews University, 62-61, in overtime in its first round game.
