Late Fayette Comeback Thwarted by Bradford

November 19, 2011

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Sophomore David Winns (Washington, DC) scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Penn State Fayette men's basketball team, but it was not enough as the Roaring Lions fell to Pitt-Bradford, 77-70, in the consolation game at the Allegheny College Invitational.

Winns was named to the All-Tournament Team for his weekend performance that saw him average 24 points and seven rebounds per game. Winns also collected eight assists and two blocks, while going 19-for-31 (61 percent) from the field.

Despite Winns' performance inside, the Roaring Lions were outscored 44-36 in the paint by the Panthers (1-2). Fayette was much improved from the field, shooting 54 percent (27-for-50), but the Panthers got off more shots despite shooting lower from the field (46 percent, 29-for-63), and collected 15 second chance points off of 18 offensive rebounds.

Junior Ryan Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 15 points and six rebounds for Fayette, while freshman Brandon Cunningham (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) scored 14 points. Sophomore Tyler VanOlst (California, Pa.) chipped in 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the arc.

The Roaring Lions led by as many as five in the first half, but the Panthers answered to lead 37-28 at the half. Pitt-Bradford extended their lead to 16 with just over 11 minutes to play, but Fayette battled to cut the deficit. However, the mid-half lead for the Panthers held up, as a late Roaring Lions field goal made the final, 77-70.

Fayette returns to action on Monday, Nov. 21 as they travel to St. Vincent College for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. TheRoaring Lions were swept by the Bearcats last season, including a 72-67 loss at home.
