Roaring Lions Clip New Kensington for Third Straight Win

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. - Junior David Winns (Washington, DC) led four Roaring Lions in double figures as Penn State Fayette defeated Penn State New Kensington, 99-84, in a Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference game Thursday night. Fayette (3-5, 2-0 PSUAC) has now won three consecutive games for the first time since January 2011.

 

Winns capped Fayette's victory with a career-high 36 points on 13-for-24 shooting. Winns added six rebounds and three blocks, while also making his first three-pointer of the season.

 

Junior Ryan Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched his third consecutive double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to help Fayette dominate the paint. Freshman Brandon Cunningham (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) added 21 points and eight rebounds, while collecting a team-high four assists. Sophomore Tyler VanOlst (California, Pa.) rounded out Fayette's double-digit scorers with 11 points, including three three-point field goals.

 

The Roaring Lions cruised to a 20-point halftime advantage, and extended their lead to as many as 31 in the second half. Despite committing only 15 turnovers, New Kensington was unable to match Fayette's strength inside. Fayette grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and collected 16 second chance points, and also held a 41-30 edge in rebounding.

 

Fayette continued its strong shooting performances, eclipsing 46 percent from the field on 36-for-77 shooting, including 21-for-42 in the first half. Despite being outshot 80-77 by New Kensington, Fayette was able to hold the Lions to 40 percent shooting from the field. The Roaring Lions drained 11 three-point field goals, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc.

 

New Kensington was led by Lamont Wright with 24 points, while Daryl Harrington added 20  and Justin Reed scored 15 for the Lions.

 

Fayette returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 as they travel to Penn State Schuylkill for a men's and women's doubleheader. The women will tip at 1:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 3:00 p.m. Both the men's and women's games with Schuylkill went to overtime in 2010, with the Fayette women and Schuylkill men claiming wins.
