No. 10 Roaring Lions Cap Season with 107-69 Win Over No. 9 Maine-Machias

UNIONTOWN, Pa. - No. 10-seed Penn State Fayette used a late half run and a strong start to the second half to cruise to a 107-69 win over no. 9-seed Maine-Machias in a consolation game in the 2012 USCAA National Basketball Championships on Thursday afternoon in the Maltho Gymnasium at Penn State Fayette.

 

Fayette (13-15, 11-7 PSUAC) received 35 points and 16 rebounds from All-American junior David Winns (Washington, DC) as the Roaring Lions placed five players in double figures. Seniors Joshua Tomson (Greensburg, Pa.) and Anthony Howard (Uniontown, Pa.) finished their careers with Fayette with 10 and three points, respectively, and are members of the first Fayette team to win a game in the National Championship Tournament. The win also marks the Roaring Lions first postseason victory in six seasons.

 

Sophomore Tyler VanOlst (California, Pa.), also playing in his last game before heading to University Park, finished with 12 points on four three-point field goals. Freshman Brandon Cunningham (Rancho Cucamonga, Ca.) capped a strong freshmen campaign with 15 points, while junior Ryan Hart (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 11 points and nine rebounds. Junior Andrew Hoye (Scenery Hill, Pa.) also finished strong with eight points and seven rebounds.

 

The Roaring Lions trailed 24-17 midway through the first half, but went on a 29-8 run to take a 46-32 lead into the half. Fayette extended their first half lead to 33 midway through the second half on the strength of 11 early second half points from Winns. Ten Fayette players scored at least three points as the Roaring Lions cruised to the 38 point victory.

 

Fayette reaches the 13-win mark for the first time in six seasons, and made the PSUAC playoffs for the first time in the same span.
