Beaver sweeps softball twinbill

HOPWOOD – Things looked pretty good for the Roaring Lions when Kasey Ruble smashed the very first pitch of the game over the left centerfield fence for her third homerun of the season.

Unfortunately, Fayette was unable to sustain the momentum dropped both games of the doubleheader to Penn State Beaver on Thursday, April 14. It proved to be an odd night with Beaver actually the home team even though the game was played on Fayette's field. The constant deluge of rain forced the change in venue.

Kayla Chambers scattered three hits in picking up the win for Beaver in the first game.  She also helped her cause with a homerun and drove in four runs.  Megan Hall and Sara Swaney had the other two hits for Fayette.

Ultimately it was an eight-run fourth inning that turned the game for the Lady Lions.

Game two also started with Ruble reaching base on an error.  She moved to second on a sacrifice by Kaitlyn Novak and raced home from second on Paige McWilliams' bunt.  Jill Guthrie followed with a ringing double off the signs in left center, the fifth time in three games that she has hit the same sign. Guthrie was stranded at second.

Beaver sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, Ashley Watkins homerun was the big blast of the six run inning. It proved to be the first of two for her on the day, including a grand slam.

Fayette put up four runs in the top of the third. Ruble started things off with a double to left field. Novak reached on an error while Ruble raced home on the play. Paige McWilliams singled up the middle, and Guthrie reached on an error. Novak scored on the play. Shannon Ardabell's sacrifice fly to right scored McWilliams. Hall's single up the middle scored Guthrie to close the scoring for Fayette.
