Fayette Drops Pair to Waynesburg

HOPWOOD, Pa. – Waynesburg used timely hitting to capitalize on its opportunities as the Lady Yellow Jackets swept the Roaring Lions in a non-conference softball doubleheader at William Beuhner Field on Wednesday.

 

GAME ONE: Waynesburg 8, Penn State Fayette 1

 

The opener began as a pitcher's duel between Fayette's Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) and Waynesburg's Jenn Ling. Kromer and Ling surrendered just two hits each during that span.

 

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Yellow Jackets capitalized on several defensive miscues on the part of the Roaring Lions to push across three runs.

 

Ashley Moon led off the inning with a single through the right side. After Rachel Moon flied out to center, the Roaring Lions defensive committed errors on consecutive batters, allowing Haley Payne and Jess Gavin to get on, loading the bases.

 

Madison Presto's single through the right side scored two. Another error allowed Jenna Dorazio to reach, loading the bases again. Jess Schinkovec's fly ball scored Gavin before Kromer got Jamie Gillum to ground out to second, ending the inning.

 

The Roaring Lions defensive woes continued as four errors in the top of the fifth allowed Waynesburg to add four more runs, all unearned, on just one hit.

 

Fayette answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a run on three hits.

 

With one out, Shelby Dziak (Belle Vernon, Pa.) singled through the left side and Jess Stairs (Uniontown, Pa.) followed with a line-drive single to right. Kaytee Cumberland's single scored Dziak and cut the Waynesburg lead to 7-1.

 

Waynesburg added a run in the seventh. Moon led off with an infield single and scored on Haley Payne's double to right center field.

 

Ling went the distance to pick up the win, scattering six hits, walking one while striking out two. Kromer took the loss, surrendering eight runs – five earned while striking out six over seven innings. She did not issue a walk.

 

Cumberland was 2-2 with an RBI for Fayette, which fell to 2-3 overall.

 

GAME TWO: Waynesburg 11, Penn State Fayette 4

 

In the nightcap, the Lady Yellow Jackets jumped on starting pitcher Jess Stairs (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) for a pair of runs in the opening frame.

 

Emily Sorton walked and stole second. She advanced to third on Clark's grounder to third. Moon was hit by a pitch and then stole second. Payne singled up the middle, driving in two.

 

Kasey Ruble replaced Stairs on the mound in the second inning and retired the side without surrendering a run.

 

Payne reached base on an error to start the third.  Gavin walked putting runners on first and second with no outs. Presto's infield single loaded the bases. Dorazio  followed with another infield single scoring Payne. Two batters later, Brittany Ellis hit a two-run single to center and Emily Sutton doubled down the right field line, also scoring two and giving the Lady Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead after three and a half innings.

 

Fayette got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third. With one out, Elizabeth D'Auria (Connellsville, Pa.) walked. Kromer followed with a single and Dziak's single to center scored two, closing the gap to 7-2 after three innings.

 

Waynesburg pushed two more across in the top of the fourth. Payne led off with a ringing double to centerfield and scored on Presto's double.  Presto moved to third on Dorazio's grounder to short and scored when Jenny Feightner reached on an error.

 

Volek came on to pitch for Ruble in the fifth and the Lady Yellow Jackets Emily Sorton greeted her with an infield single and stole second. She advanced to third on a grounder and scored on Moon's single through the left side, giving Waynesburg a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

 

Fayette  scored two in its half of the fifth. Cumberland singled though the right side to start the inning and moved to second on Dziak's single up the middle. Volek then crushed a double off the fence in center field, scoring Dziak and Cumberland.

 

The Lady Yellow Jackets closed the scoring in the top of the sixth, plating a run when Dorazio scored on an error.

 

Vokek and Dziak led the Fayette offense, both going 2-4 with two RBI.

 

Carrie Maier got the win for Waynesburg, scattering eight hits over seven innings, notching three strike outs while issuing a single walk. All four of Fayette's runs were earned.

 

Fayette drops to 2-4 on the season and travels to Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
