Fayette Drops Twinbill at Saint Vincent

March 26, 2012

LATROBE, Pa. - Freshman Katie Volek (Smithfield, Pa.) managed Penn State Fayette's only two hits of the afternoon, both in game one of a doubleheader with Saint Vincent, as the Roaring Lions fell 12-0 and 8-0 to their NCAA Division III foes.

After being shutout in game one, Fayette (2-6) fell victim to Emily Lauterbach's six-inning perfect game in the nightcap. Despite striking out only four batters, Lauterbach was able to keep the Roaring Lions off of the basepaths, as Fayette grounded out 13 times.

GAME ONE: St. Vincent 12, Penn State Fayette 0

Volek took the loss in game one, and despite singles in the second and the fourth, was unable to rally her team to match Saint Vincent (11-7). The Bearcats hammered out 12 hits and 12 runs in the opener, and Volek struggled with her control as she walked seven on the afternoon.

Saint Vincent scored in every inning, plating one in the first, three in the second, and four in both the third and fourth innings. The game ended due to the eight-run rule after Fayette failed to score in the top half of the fifth.

GAME TWO: St. Vincent 8, Penn State Fayette 0

Saint Vincent capitalized on six Roaring Lions' errors in game two, as freshman Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) took the loss. Kromer surrendered 11 hits and eight runs, six earned, while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings.

Lauterbach tossed six perfect innings en route to her shortened perfect game. Maria Adams had three hits, while Becky Deane added two hits and two RBIs for the Bearcats, who scored two runs in the first inning. After a scoreless second, Saint Vincent plated a third run in the bottom of the third inning, and followed with three more in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. With two outs and no baserunners in the bottom of the sixth, Adams double to center and Deane followed with an RBI single. A single and double plated the Bearcats' final run as Saint Vincent swept Fayette.

The Roaring Lions return to acton on Wednesday, March 28 as they host Carlow at 6:30 p.m. at William Buehner Field at Hutchinson Park in Hopwood, Pa.
