Roaring Lions Drop Twinbill to Beaver

April 11, 2012

HOPWOOD, Pa. --  A gritty Penn State Fayette softball team faced the elements and one of the top teams in the PSUAC on Wednesday afternoon.  Despite a hard fight, the Roaring Lions dropped both ends of a double header to Penn State Beaver by scores of 12-7 and 8-1.

GAME ONE: Penn State Beaver 12, Penn State Fayette 7

Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) took the loss in game one, going the distance and striking out seven while yielding 12 hits.

Beaver struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame, scoring two runs on one hit.

The Roaring Lions tied it in the bottom of the inning. With two out, Jess Stairs (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) reached on an error and after Katie Volek (Smithfield, Pa.) singled, Stairs scored on Stephanie Longo's (Point Marion, Pa.) single. Stacy Riggar's (Uniontown, Pa.) single scored Volek to the game up at two.

Both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings before Beaver pushed across a run in the top of the fourth on two hits.

Fayette answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run without the benefit of a hit. Riggar opened the inning with a walk and scored when Kaytee Cumberland (Leisenring, Pa.) reached on a fielder's choice.

The Roaring Lions took the lead in the fifth. After one out, Stairs singled and scored when Voleck launched a towering triple to right center.

Beaver took control of the game scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth and adding 2 more in the seventh.

The Roaring Lions rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh.  Kromer led off with a bunt single and scored on Volek's double. Longo walked and she and Volek scored on Riggar's double.

Volek was the hitting star, going 3-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Riggar was 2-3 with 3 RBI

GAME TWO: Penn State Beaver 8, Penn State Fayette 1

Riggar continued to swing the hot back in the second game, going 2-3. Kromer's blast in the Hutchinson Lake in the bottom of the third accounted for the only run Fayette would score.

Beaver broke a 1-1 tie with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The Lady Lions put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Volek took the loss for Fayette, tossing seven innings, surrendering eight hits, striking out two and walking two. She allowed just three earned runs.

Fayette returns to PSUAC action on Saturday when the Roaring Lions host Penn State Schuylkill at 2 p.m. at Hutchinson Park.
