Softball Blanks Schuylkill Twice in Doubleheader Sweep

April 14, 2012

HOPWOOD, Pa. – Penn State Fayette rode great pitching efforts from Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) and Jessica Stairs (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) and Stacy Riggar's (Uniontown, Pa.) hot bat to a pair of PSUAC wins over Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday. Kromer blanked the Lady Lions 3-0 in the first game and Stairs followed by a masterpiece of her own for a 5-0 win.

GAME ONE: Penn State Fayette 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Kromer scattered four hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two to improve to 4-5 on the season.

Riggar smacked three doubles in as many at-bats.

Kromer and Schuylkill's Bryanna Snowell matched zeros until the fifth when Paige McWilliams (Connellsville, Pa.) launched a one-out triple over the head of the right fielder and eventually scored on Kromer's infield single.

Fayette added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Ruggar led off with her third double of the game and scored on Stephanie Longo's (Point Marion, Pa.) single up the middle. Longo advanced to third on a pair of passed balls and scored on McWilliams' grounder to second.

Shelby Dziak (Eighty Four, Pa.) went two-for-two with a double.

GAME TWO: Penn State Fayette 5, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Stairs blanked Schuylkill on five hits while striking out six to improve to 2-2 on the year.

The Roaring Lions scored all of the runs they would need in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs.

Riggar led off with a walk and moved to second when Longo reached on an error. Elizabeth D'Auria (Connellsville, Pa.) singled up the middle scoring Riggar. An error on the first baseman allowed Kaytee Cumberland (Liesinring, Pa.) to reach. Longo came around to score on the play. Cumberland stole second and when the throw from the catcher skipped into centerfield D'Auria scored.

Kromer's infield single scored Cumberland to close out the scoring for the inning.

Fayette added a run in the sixth when D'Auria reached on an error and scored on Cumberland's single to center.

The Roaring Lions improve to 8-10 on the year and 4-2 in PSUAC play. Fayette plays host to Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the William Beuhner Field at the Hutchinson complex in Hopwood.
