Softball Drops Pair of Heartbreakers to Mont Alto

April 15, 2012

HOPWOOD, Pa. – It was heartbreak city for the Roaring Lions as they dropped a pair of tough decisions to Penn State Mont Alto on Sunday. Fayette fell by scores of 3-1 and 3-2.

GAME ONE: Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Fayette 1

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth as Fayette's Moriah Kromer (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) and Mont Alto's Jessica Miller were locked in a pitching duel.

Fayette took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kaytee Cumberland (Leisenring, Pa.) led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on Kromer's single though the left side.

It stayed that way until the top of the sixth, when Mont Alto scored three to take the lead. An unfortunate bounce off of fielder's glove gave Alicia Morgan a home run to start the inning.  The Lady Lions tacked on two more runs thanks to a Fayette error to close out the scoring.

Kromer took the loss, scattering six hits over seven innings, striking out eight and walking none. Only one of the three runs was earned.

Cumberland was the hitting star, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.

GAME TWO:  Penn State Mont Alto 3, Penn State Fayette 2

Miller limited the Roaring Lions to four hits in the second game. Kromer, coming on in relief of Jess Stairs (Mount Pleasant, Pa.), took the loss despite scattering three hits and striking out four.

Mont Alto took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Helena DeShong led off the inning with a triple and scored when Morgan popped out to short as Kromer made a spectacular running grab to record the out.  Shannell Wray scored on Amber Zenobile's single to center.

Fayette answered with two of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Stairs reached on an error and Stacy Riggar walked. Both came around to score when the catcher threw the ball away on Paige McWilliams' (Connellsville, Pa.) bunt.

Mont Alto got the winning run in the top of the sixth. Carley Morgan reached base on a two-base error and eventually scored on Zinoble's single down the right field line.

Fayette falls to 8-12 on the season and 4-4 in PSUAC play. The Roaring Lions close out the 2012 home schedule on Monday, April 16 when they host Penn State Greater Allegheny in a nighttime doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Hutchinson Park.
