Lady Roaring Lions Sweep Up the Field

Oliver, Pa- After coming off a big win against Penn State Beaver, the Penn State Fayette Women's Softball team hosted Penn State Greater Allegheny on April 12th. The Lady Roaring Lions had an outstanding performance as they swept Greater Allegheny, 2-0 in their double-header.

For Game one, freshman pitcher Tiffany Markovitch got Fayette on track with an eye opening start striking 3 out of 4 batters in the top of the first inning. To complement Markovitch's pitching, Sophomore Hannah Kline opens the bats with a bunt to get on first base. Freshman Aubree Yates begins her great night with a big triple to right field sending Kline home to put a run on the board and gave a spark for the Lady Roaring Lions in mid game. They stayed alive in the bottom of the 5th as the start of the lineup gave them another small run. Hannah Kline hits a double and advances #11 Caitlyn Brown to third. Right behind Kline, Yates had another memorable hit, finding a gap in the defense allowing Kline and Brown to add the final runs in the first game to give them a 3-0 win.

For freshman Tiffany Markovitch, this is the beginning of her collegiate softball career. Markovitch is a local resident in the Brownsville area graduating from Brownsville High School. Markovitch had a career high of 10 strikeouts in the first game against Penn State Greater Allegheny. The Brownsville native didn't let up in the second game against GA. She had another 8 strikeouts in the final game of their doubleheader giving her a total of 18 strikeouts against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Markovitch is currently ranked 3rd in the PSUAC for strikeouts with a total of 41.

In game two of the night, Penn State Greater Allegheny tries a different pitcher freshman Savannah Simm. Switching pitchers didn't stop the Fayette Lady Roaring Lions as Hannah Kline starts this game off right with a leadoff double down the left field line. Aubree Yates bunts and advances Kline to 3rd. Senior Miranda Nichols finds her bat and hits a single RBI to boost the atmosphere for Fayette. Freshman Lauren Adams follows her teammate's steps by adding another hit and sending Yates and Monica Joseph (walked) to score for a 3-0 start in the bottom of the first. Although, this wasn't enough for Fayette rolling into the second inning as GA switches their pitcher back to freshman Lacie Lautner who pitched in the first game. Fayette had the bases loaded when Tiffany Markovitch hit a double sending all the players home to give them a 7-1 lead at the bottom of the 2nd. For the remainder of the game, the Lady Lions didn't allow Greater Allegheny to poke at them. The Fayette team worked hard together to stop a 2-0 run in the top of the 7th to give Penn State Fayette a 7-3 win.

The Lady Roaring Lion's earn an A for their fielding efforts. Fayette held Greater Allegheny to 3 total runs for both games. Fayette's defense stayed strong behind their young pitcher by diving for fly balls and making amazing throws. A player that was doing both of these is CF Aubree Yates. Yates dove for fly balls and even got a runner out from throwing the ball from the center field to catcher Miranda Nichols at home. Yates had one of her best performances so far this season going 4-for-4 at bat including 3 singles and 1 double.

After sweeping Greater Allegheny, Fayette is now 5-3 in the conference. The Penn State Fayette Lady Roaring Lions will host Penn State Dubois on Thursday April 13th. Game one is set for 2 pm.
