Fayette takes down York in conference opener

December 4, 2010—York, Pa.

Kasey Ruble led all scorers with 24 points as the Lady Roaring Lions toppled Penn State York, 81-65, in Fayette's conference opener. Ruble, a sophomore point guard, tallied her season-best points total by shooting 8-for-15 from the floor while also leading Fayette with eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. The win improves the Lady Roaring Lions to 1-8 overall, 1-0 in the PSUAC while York dropped to 1-6 overall, 1-1 in the PSUAC.

Ruble received plenty of help from her backcourt teammates, as sophomore Kaitlyn Novak had a career high 17 points while freshman Jill Guthrie added 13 points and six rebounds to round out the Lady Roaring Lions scorers in double figures. Novak and junior Heather Burton combined for four of Fayette's seven three-point field goals, helping the Lady Roaring Lions pull away in the second half. York's short bench could not match Fayette's depth, as eight Fayette players exceeded 12 minutes of playing time and nine players scored. Burton chipped in nine points, while sophomores Kayla Hatfield and Jennifer Thomas each contributed six points and four rebounds to help balance the Fayette attack.

Fayette outrebounded York 41-32 including pulling down 18 offensive rebounds, while also recording 12 steals to York's seven. Those steals turned into points for Fayette, as the Lady Roaring Lions scored 21 points off of turnovers. Although York outshot Fayette 40 percent to 38 percent, the Lady Roaring Lions were able to get off 25 more shots than their opponent. The Lady Roaring Lions also made nearly as many three-point field goals (7) as York attempted (8).

Both teams struggled to stay out of foul trouble, as each team reached the double bonus in both halves. Fayette had six players with at least four fouls, while York had five of their seven players commit four fouls. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws, with Ruble attempting a game-high 14.

York was led by Lindsay Mumma, who recorded a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Kuhn added 19 points while Laura Hoffman scored 12 for the short-handed Lions.

The 81 points scored by the Lady Roaring Lions is a season-high after a tough stretch to open the season. Fayette continues their conference slate as they host Penn State Schuylkill at noon on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Community Center Main Arena. The Lady Roaring Lions look for their first ever 2-0 conference start before taking a four week break to the spring schedule.
