Lady Roaring Lions can’t overcome early deficit

The Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions fell behind early to visiting Southern Virginia and could not overcome the deficit, dropping their second game to the Knights in the matter of eight days, 52-36. The teams combined to commit only 19 fouls and shot 19 free throws in a clean, down tempo game.

 

The Roaring Lions (0-7) were led by sophomore forward Kayla Hatfield who scored eight points and grabbed a team high five rebounds. Freshmen guard Jill Guthrie returned to action one game after injuring her knee, posting nine points, five steals and three rebounds in limited time. Sophomore guard Kasey Ruble struggled from the field, but still chipped in seven points and four assists.

 

Southern Virginia took a 15-2 lead before Fayette could cut the deficit to 11 at halftime. The Knights extended the lead again in the second half to as many as 19, outscoring the Lady Roaring Lions 16-6 in bench points. Southern Virginia was led by three players in double figures—Cara Joyner collected 13 points, while Nicole Tolman added 12 points and nine rebounds and Carly Skinner chipped in with 10 points. Fayette outshot Southern Virginia 54-52, but could not get baskets to fall early in either half.

 

The Lady Roaring Lions hit the road next to take on Point Park on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. Point Park defeated Fayette 84-48 on Nov. 22.
