Poor start dooms Lady Roaring Lions at Carlow

January 12, 2011--Pittsburgh, Pa.

A sluggish start by the Penn State Fayette women's basketball team could not be overcome by a late second-half surge, as they fell to Carlow University, 68-58, in a non-conference match-up for the second time this season. Carlow defeated the Lady Roaring Lions 68-49 in the Penn State Greater Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 12.

Sophomore Kayla Hatfield scored 15 points to lead Fayette, while freshman Jill Guthrie added 11 points. Both Guthrie and Hatfield also tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven each. Sophomore Kaitlyn Novak dropped in nine points in a game-high 38 minutes of playing time, but it was not enough as Carlow's first half lead was too much to overcome.

Fayette outrebounded Carlow 46-45 and also shot nearly 77 percent from the free throw line (20-for-26). However a poor shooting first half dug the Lady Roaring Lions a 15-point hole by halftime, and despite holding Carlow without a field goal for the final 3:19 of the game, it was not enough.

Carlow was led by Sarah McAteer with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Chanel Berry added 10 points, while Jessalyn Timko pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Only conference games remain for Fayette, as Carlow concludes the Lady Roaring Lions' non-conference slate. The Lady Roaring Lions return to PSUAC play this Saturday as they travel to Penn State Mont Alto, set to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
