Lady Roaring Lions drop home opener

November 22, 2010—Uniontown, Pa

Opening their 2010-11 home schedule, the Lady Roaring Lions basketball team struggled against NAIA member Point Park, falling 84-48. Point Park evened their season record at 2-2 while the Lady Roaring Lions fell to 0-6.

Sophomore forward Kayla Hatfield led the Lady Roaring Lions with a season-high 17 points, including two three point field goals. Sophomore guard Kasey Ruble scored 13 points while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Nicole Garrety chipped in with seven points and six rebounds, while freshman guard Jill Guthrie was limited to only seven points and 12 minutes of playing time due to an injury sustained in the first half.

Point Park made 14 three point shots, which allowed the Pioneers to pull away slowly in the first half before slowing the game down in the second half. The Pioneers also held a 48-34 rebounding advantage. The Lady Roaring Lions collected nine steals, including four by Ruble, but it was not enough to stop Point Park. The Pioneers were led by Sarah Sandin and Ashley Henderson, who scored 16 and 14 points respectively.

Fayette next hosts Southern Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Main Arena in a rematch of their meeting at the Great Ships Classic in Hampton, Va., Nov. 19. Southern Virginia emerged as the winner, outlasting the Lady Roaring Lions 72-43. The teams also met three times last season, with Southern Virginia claiming two of the three games. Fayette, however, recorded their first even non-conference victory in the programs three year history when they defeated the Knights 62-56 on Feb. 17 and knocked the Knights out of contention for a bid to the USCAA National Championships.
