Buzzer Beater gives Fayette Dramatic Win Over Franciscan

November 22, 2011

STEUBENVILLE, Oh. - Last second heroics gave Penn State Fayette's women's basketball team a dramatic 74-73 win over NCAA Division III foe Franciscan University on Tuesday night.

Trailing by two with only seconds remaining in the second half, freshman Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) went to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game at 73-73. After making the first attempt, Wontroba's second caromed off the iron, but senior Jennifer Thomas (Uniontown, Pa.) collected the rebound and banked in a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Roaring Lions (1-3) their first ever win in program history over a Division III team.

Wontroba paced the Roaring Lions with 26 points, including four three-pointers, and a career-high five steals. Sophomore Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.) added 25 points, a game-high six steals and grabbed six rebounds, while junior Kasey Ruble (Fairchance, Pa.) added 15 and pulled down five rebounds.

The Barons (0-4) were led by Lacey Huck with 27 points, while Hannah Flanagan added 20. Amy O'Keefe collected a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Fayette takes an 11-day hiatus before hosting Penn State York on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the Roaring Lions' conference opener in the Community Center Main Arena.
