Fayette Falls to Point Park, 84-71

January 10, 2012

UNIONTOWN, Pa. - Penn State Fayette's women's basketball team dropped its second straight game, falling to Point Park, 84-71, in a non-conference game in the Community Center Main Arena. Point Park sweeps the season series, including a 91-29 win back on Nov. 16, 2011, and improves to 12-4 on the season.

The Roaring Lions (4-6, 3-0 PSUAC) were led by sophomore Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.), who notched a double-double with 12 points, and game-highs with 15 rebounds and six steals. Freshman Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) scored 23 points for Fayette, while junior Kaitlyn Novak (Bobtown, Pa.) added 19. Senior Jennifer Thomas (Uniontown, Pa.) rounded out Fayette's double figure scorers with 11 points.

Fayette trailed the entire game, including a 41-34 deficit at halftime. The Roaring Lions trimmed Point Park's lead to four midway through the second half, but a 20-0 Pioneers spurt beginning at the 13:00 minute mark doomed Fayette, and a late charge wasn't enough to overcome Point Park's bloated lead.

Fayette went 23-for-62, 37 percent, from the field, including eight three-point field goals. The Pioneers bench dominated with 51 points, as they shuffled in five subs every few minutes. A distinct size advantage for Point Park led to lopsided rebounding, 59-42, and points in the paint, 36-18, as the Pioneers won both battles.

Point Park was led by Emily Schartner with 12 points, as Kristen Beatty, Joncelyn Peterkin and Katresa Savisky each added 10 for the Pioneers. Point Park turned 26 Fayette turnovers into 26 points, while Fayette could only convert 16 points off of 24 takeaways.

The Roaring Lions return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:00 p.m. to host Carlow in a non-conference match-up. Fayette returns to conference play on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1:00 p.m. against Penn State Mont Alto.
