Fayette Powers Past Penn State Greater Allegheny, 83-59

January 31, 2012

MCKEESPORT, Pa. - Penn State Fayette received career-highs of 34 points and 17 rebounds from sophomore Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.) as the Roaring Lions (8-9, 7-1 PSUAC) used a 21-point halftime lead en route to an 83-59 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny in a Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference game.

Guthrie led the way for a strong shooting performance from the Roaring Lions, making 13 shots in only 20 attempts, and getting to the free throw line 12 times, making eight. However, Guthrie was not alone on the offensive end of the floor, as Fayette shot 49 percent as a team.

Freshman Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) added three three-point field goals, as she scored 17 points. Junior Kaitlyn Novak (Bobtown, Pa.) scored 12 points for Fayette, while junior Kasey Ruble (Fairchance, Pa.) added six points and a season-high eight assists. Guthrie also added six steals.

The Roaring Lions used a 45-point first half, including 18-for-37 shooting, to enjoy a 45-24 lead heading into the break. Greater Allegheny (8-11, 7-4 PSUAC) was unable to overcome poor shooting in the first half, making just 24 percent on their home floor in the first half. Despite shooting nearly 39 percent in the second half, it was not enough as Fayette held off any Lady Lions' comeback attempts.

Christina Floyd's 13 points and 12 rebounds led Greater Allegheny, and Megan Brinkos added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Fayette returns to action on Groundhog Day, Thursday, Feb. 2 as they travel through Punxsatawney on their way to Penn State DuBois (12-5, 7-2 PSUAC) for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off. Fayette sits one-half game ahead of DuBois in the PSUAC Western Division.
