Penn State Fayette Falls to No. 16 Penn State DuBois, 77-74

DUBOIS, Pa. - Penn State Fayette couldn't complete their comeback attempt, as no. 16 Penn State DuBois notched a 77-74 win in Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday night. Fayette (8-10, 7-2 PSUAC) now sits a half-game behind DuBois (13-5, 8-2 PSUAC) in the PSUAC Western Division.

Sophomore Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.) collected her second consecutive double-double with a game-high 28 points while adding 10 rebounds. Guthrie also led Fayette with four assists and three steals. Freshman Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) scored 18 points for Fayette.

Despite committing only 12 turnovers, the Roaring Lions were unable to control the boards, as DuBois outrebounded Fayette, 50-37. DuBois' Kesley Rini grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds for the Lady Lions.

Fayette struggled from the free throw line all night, going just 13-for-24 from the charity stripe. Fayette shot 39 percent from the field, and although DuBois could only muster 35 percent from the floor, the Lady Lions managed to knock down eight three-point field goals. DuBois also made 19 free throws in 30 attempts.

Tessa Vargas led DuBois with 22 points while Karlee Cyphert added 16 for the Lady Lions.

The loss drops Fayette into third place in the Western Division, and fourth overall in the PSUAC. The Roaring Lions sit a half-game behind DuBois and Penn State Brandywine, both 8-2 in conference play, for second place.

The Roaring Lions host conference leader Penn State Beaver on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Center Main Arena. A win for Fayette will guarantee a spot in the PSUAC Playoffs.
