Roaring Lions Knock Out Penn State Greater Allegheny, 78-60

February 8, 2012

UNIONTOWN, Pa. - Penn State Fayette honored their "Think Pink" game by recording their sixth win in their last eight games, beating Penn State Greater Allegheny, 78-60, in a Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference game in the Community Center Main Arena on Wednesday night.

The Roaring Lions (10-10, 9-2 PSUAC) reach double-digit wins for the second consecutive season and are .500 for the first time this season.

Sophomore Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.) led Fayette with a game-high 27 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, surpassing her previous mark of 17 rebounds set against Greater Allegheny on Jan. 31.

Fayette jumped out to an early 15-2 advantage, using six points from sophomore Shelby Yourchik (Clarksville, Pa.), who finished with nine points and nine rebounds, in the first four minutes to pull away early. The Roaring Lions continued their strong performance to lead 40-17 at halftime.

Fayette took advantage of a poor shooting performance by the Lady Lions that included no three-pointers, and just 28 percent from the field, including only 16 percent in the first half. Meanwhile, Fayette shot nearly 40 percent from the field, and cashed in on six three-point field goals. The Roaring Lions would lead by as many as 32 in the second half, and despite a 23-9 Greater Allegheny run to end the game, Fayette held onto their comfortable cushion to win easily.

Junior Kasey Ruble (Fairchance, Pa.) added 13 points and a game-high five assists for Fayette, who has clinched their berth in the PSUAC Playoffs.

Fayette outrebounded Greater Allegheny 58-47, and despite Greater Allegheny's advantage inside, the Roaring Lions were able to use their early cushion to cruise to the victory. Greater Allegheny outscored Fayette 32-28 in the paint and capitalized with 27 second-chance points.

The Lady Lions were led by Taylor McCallister with 15 points, while Christina Floyd grabbed a game-high 21 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

Fayette returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 1:00 p.m. tip as they travel to Penn State Brandywine for PSUAC match-up. The Roaring Lions complete their conference schedule with games against Penn State DuBois and Penn State Scranton over the next two weeks.
