Fayette edges Brandywine in 80-79 thriller

MEDIA, Pa. – It came down to the wire – no surprise when Fayette meets Brandywine. Three of the last four meetings have been decided by two points or less.

Sunday afternoon was no exception. In a game that saw three ties and six lead changes, Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) sank a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to lift the Lady Roaring Lions (5-4, 4-0 PSUAC) to an 80-79 win.

Wondroba's layup with 2:56 to go in the first half gave Fayette a 40-27 lead. Brandywine then outscored Fayette 11-2 to close out the half and cut the deficit to 42-38.

A free throw by Wontroba gave Fayette a seven-point lead with six minutes to play.

Jessica Gledhill then hit a jumper to ignite a 14-8 run that Amanda Congaldi finished with a layup off of a steal by Laruen Monro to give Brandywine a 79-78 lead with eight seconds left.

That's when Wontroba took over. After receiving the inbounds pass, the two-time USCAA All-American she drove the length of the court and was attempting a floater when she was fouled by Stacey McArthur.

The junior sank the first one and after a Brandywine timeout, calmly buried the second shot to seal the win for the Lady Roaring Lions.

For the game, Fayette had three players notch double-doubles – the first time in the program's history that has happened.

Kaitlin Miller (Bald Eagle, Pa.) led all scorers with 23 points and added 15 rebounds. Wontroba had 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with 10 assists for the Lady Roaring Lions. Jill Guthrie (Uniontown, Pa.) added 18 and 13.

Tara Neely (Morgantown, W.Va.) dropped 16 points, had three assists and three steals.

Congaldi paced Brandywine (2-4, 1-2) with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Olivia Encarnacion added 19 and three assists while Stacey MacArthur added 14 and Gledhill 13.
