Lady Roaring Lions close season with 77-54 win over Maine Augusta

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. – It wasn't the win they wanted, but in the end, seniors Jill Guthrie, Shelby Yourchik and Caitlin Wontroba walked off the court winners.

The trio closed out their careers with a 77-54 win over Maine-Augusta in the consolation round of the USCAA Women's Division II National Basketball Championships.

The Lady Roaring Lions bounced back from a difficult loss to Albany Pharmacy  a night earlier to turn in one of their best performances of the season.

After falling behind 5-0, the Lady Roaring Lions went on a 15-4 run to take the lead. Kaitlin Miller's (Bald Eagle, Pa.) layup at 7:42 keyed a 14-2 run that gave the Roaring Lions a commanding lead that they would not relinquish and Fayette went into the locker room with a 20-point halftime lead.

The second half was a mirror of the first, with Fayette making a series of runs to keep the game out of reach.

As was fitting, Fayette's two active 1,000 point-scorers led the Lady Roaring Lions (15-10) in scoring, as both Caitlin Wontroba (Uniontown, Pa.) and Jill Guthrie both scored 16. Wontroba dished out eight assists while Guthrie pulled down seven rebounds to go with four assists.

Courtney Haines (McClellandtown, Pa.) added 11 to go with eight rebounds, while Shannon Flament scored 10.

Three-time USCAA Academic All-American Shelby Yourchik scored seven and grabbed four rebounds to go with two assists in her final game in a Fayette uniform

For the game, the Roaring Lions shot 41 percent and a torrid 43 percent from behind the arc.
