WBB downs Mont Alto for second straight win

Lemont Furnace, PA - Dae-lin Burnsworth (Monarch, PA/Connellsville HS) scored 18 points and Taylor Costa (Donora, PA/Ringgold HS) added 17 to lead the Penn State Fayette women's basketball team to a come from behind PSUAC win over Penn State Mont Alto Saturday, 69-61.

Monto Alto (1-8, 0-5) took control of the game halfway through the first quarter and held a 16-9 lead at the end of the frame.

A Kara Newell jumper gave Mont Alto an 18-9 lead with 9:03 to go in the second quarter, but Fayette went on a 10-0 run to give the hosts its first lead since a Kaitlyn Riley (Charleroi, PA/Charleroi HS) layup gave Fayette a 5-4 advantage with 7:26 to play in the first quarter.

Up 30-29 in the closing moments of the half, Costa hit two free throws to give Fayette a three-point lead going into the break.

Fayette outscored the guests 21-15 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 53-44 heading into the final frame.

Mont Alto would get no closer than six points in the fourth quarter and Fayette closed out its second straight win.

For the game, Fayette made 24 out of 66 shot attempts (36.4%) while Mont Alto made 25 of its 63 attempts (39.7%).

Fayette was more aggressive and it showed as it doubled Mont Alto by getting to the the foul line 28 times, making 18 of them (64.3%) while Mont Alto made nine of its 14 free throw attempts (64.3%).

Lyndsey Huhn (California, PA/California HS) led Fayette with 11 rebounds while Costa grabbed eight.

Fayette, which only had five assists on its 24 baskets, hosts Lorain CCC Monday at 4:00 p.m. in an exhibition game.
