WBB splits opening weekend games

The Penn State Fayette women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season in the Jim Walton Tipoff at Potomac State Community College, and the Nittany Lions came away with a split in their two games.

Friday night, the Nittany Lions (1-1) lost to Garrett Community College, 70-47, as three players fouled out before downing the tournament hosts Saturday, 73-69.

"I think nerves took over as we could not shoot the ball and played badly," said head coach Scott Hillen. "Once the players start getting more familiar with each other, we will play better, and that is what we did Saturday in our win.  We will look to continue to build off of the win."

In the opener, Taylor McCormick (Laurel, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt HS) led Fayette with 14 points.

Saturday, McCormick paced four Nittany Lions in double figures with 25 points and seven assists, Alison Boykin (Canton, OH/Canton McKinley HS) had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Morgan Rigsby (West Portsmith, OH/West Portsmith HS) finished with 12 points and ZaMeriah Edwards (Houston, PA/Chartiers Houston HS) added 11.

McCormick and Boykin were selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Nittany Lions return to action Wednesday in their home opener when Community College of Allegheny County heads to campus.  Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
