WBB second in West for PSUACs

The brackets for the 2021-22 Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) women's basketball tournament have been released, and thanks to finishing second in the West division, the Penn State Fayette women's team has a first-round bye.

Despite dropping a first-place showdown at West champion Penn State Beaver Thursday, Fayette coach Scott Hillen is excited for the playoffs.

"We are excited, like every other team," said Hillen.  "I really believe that there are six or seven teams in the conference, that if they get hot, could win it all.  The conference has been very competitive this year.  We have been able to find ways to win to put us where we are at.  We know we will have to play very well and need the players to step up if we are going to have success in the playoffs.  At this point, the regular season does not matter.  This is the start of a new season and if you lose, you are done.  Looking at possible matchups, every game will be tough.  Playing every team in the West twice makes third matchups very tough and out East, they have some very good teams.  This is what we work so hard for, and every game will be a battle."

Fayette (15-8 overall, 13-6 PSUAC) awaits the winner of the first-round matchup between Penn State Shenango (10-11, 10-9), the third-place team out of the West, and Penn State DuBois (7-15, 6-13), the sixth seed.  The game will be Monday.

During the season, Fayette and Shenango split their two regular season games with the home team winning both times.  Fayette won 51-49 on January 14 before losing at Shenango 67-47 on Valentine's Day.  Fayette swept DuBois, with the first win being a forfeit and the second victory was a 79-78 win on February 5.

In the West's four-five game, Penn State Mont Alto (13-11, 10-9) faces Penn State Greater Allegheny (11-15, 9-10).

East division champion Penn State Schuylkill (20-7, 18-1) receives a bye.  Penn State Lehigh Valley (20-5, 17-2) is the East's second seed and takes on Penn State Wilkes-Barre (1-21, 1-18), the division's seventh seed.  Penn State York (17-9, 12-7), the East's third seed, hosts sixth-seeded Penn State Scranton (4-18, 4-15) and Penn State Hazleton (13-10, 11-8), the East's fourth seed, hosts Penn State Brandywine (12-17, 8-11).
