Fayette Takes Third at PSU Beaver Volleyball Classic

Monaca, Pa. -- The Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions volleyball team bounced back from a disappointing opening round loss to take third place at the Penn State Beaver/USCAA Volleyball Classic on Saturday, sweeping Penn College 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) before blanking Ohio State Marion 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) in the third place game.

 

In their second game of pool play, the Roaring Lions (2-1) controlled their PSUAC foes Penn College behind junior Leah Ambrosini's (Connellsville, Pa.) 13 kills. Senior Katie Sleasman (Connellsville, Pa.) led Fayette with 19 assists, while freshman Emily Konter (Brownsville, Pa.) added 10. Fayette owned the net, as freshman Katlyn Salisbury (Madison, Pa.) recorded a career-high seven blocks, and sophomore Caitlin Fidel (Perryopolis, Pa.) contributed five kills and four blocks. Freshman Janelle Cooper (Uniontown, Pa.) added three blocks and a career high eight digs. Sophomore Marney Hillen (Connellsville, Pa.) contributed to Fayette's defensive effort, leading the Roaring Lions with 12 digs while also notching nine kills. Sophomore libero Victoria Kearns (Uniontown, Pa.) added six digs.

 

With their win over Penn, Fayette fought it's way into the third place game to face Ohio State Marion. The Roaring Lions provided another strong defensive performance, with Hillen once again leading the team in digs, this time with 10. Ambrosini added nine digs, two blocks and a team-high 15 kills. Konter added seven digs and 11 assists, while Sleasman notched a season-high 22 assists. Salisbury was strong at the net again, recording three blocks and five kills, and Fidel contributed six kills to the Roaring Lions effort.

 

The Roaring Lions take a four day break before hosting Waynesburg College in their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the Penn State Fayette Community Center.
